Fresno Ca,|WHAT TO WEAR FOR YOUR FALL FAMILY SESSION?

WHAT TO WEAR FOR YOUR FALL FAMILY SESSION?

I put together a short list of tips and a styling guide to help you coordinate your family's fall outfits for your upcoming fall photo session. The most common question I receive from my clients is what to wear. During the fall season, I notice lots of the same problems when it comes to wardrobe. Sometimes, I think everyone has the same Pinterest board and sees similar outfits. I want everyone to know that there is so much more you must consider when putting together a wardrobe for a photography session. Put down the Pinterest board and read this blog to learn how to structure your photography wardrobe like a professional stylist.

The first thing to consider is (where)

Ask yourself where my session is taking place. You not only have to coordinate with your family but with your location as well. You can ask yourself some of the following questions. Will we be set against a golden grassy field, green trees, or eye-catching fall color? Knowing your location will help determine the colors you choose. You want your family to pop enough but also tie in with the colors of your surroundings. The most important thing here is to blend only a little. You also want to be comfortable and, if needed, bring layers where your session will take place if it's cold. Thinking about this now will prevent you from just throwing on a random jacket on your way out.

What's your family style?

How do you want these photos to feel? What you wear will play a HUGE factor in the vibe your photos give.  I can pick a beautiful location at the perfect sunset, but if you wear sweatpants or a bright neon shirt, the "vibe" will be off, and you won't have cohesive family images. Maybe I'm exaggerating by saying you'll bring sweatpants, but I'm thinking about what message I want these clothes to help me tell. So, take a moment and think, "What is the vibe you want to try for?" Also, remember to stay within your comfort zone. You don't want added stress that could translate on camera. Just start by thinking. Do I want a classic look? Or maybe a little boho? Perhaps something bold? Gather your ideas and go from there.

I've heard from past clients that they select the mood of their wardrobe based on where they want to display the photos in the home. They look at it as what matches the vibe of my living room, for example. You might think this is going overboard, and it could be more serious, but in fact, you are investing money into into having amazing photos, and as any stylist would advise, this is an important step. Also, a little disclaimer: your family doesn't have to have a style if that's not who you are. I also have some super laidback clients who made that their family vibe. They selected back-easy clothing. They added layers to add that extra effect.

Earthy tones for the win

When it comes to a fall wardrobe, earthy tones are as simple as can be. If you need clarification on what your family's vibe or style is and what style you want to go with it, I highly recommend choosing earthy tones! Why? They complement every skin tone and look so beautiful at golden hour. They are also fall colors and match almost every location. They are also super easy to find! Most clothing styles carry earthy tones, so there is no need to shop like crazy.

Some tips to help you prepare!

What you should do

Now, here are the things you should do for your sessions. You are starting with wearing walking shoes! This is a big one for women. Think comfort; you want to avoid wearing high heels. Walking in them is not fun, but it is even worse when they sink in the grass or dirt. Stick with flats or wear boots. They are always great for the fall.

Another thing you should do is layer your clothing. Add a cardigan, a scarf, or maybe even a jean jacket. This adds more texture and ties in a look for the fall season.

Now for the things you shouldn't do

Here's what not to do: Wear clothing with logos. This is a big one for the kiddos. Try to stay away from super loose clothing. Also, no baseball hats or any type of hat that is too big. They can cast a shadow on your face, and you don't want that.
