WHAT TO WEAR TO A FAMILY PHOTO SESSION LA PHOTOGRAPHER
We all want to look our best for our family photos, Here’s a list of a few tips I share with my clients to get them ready for our sessions.
TIP 1: PLAN YOUR OUTFITS IN ADVANCE
what I mean by planning in advance is having the family try on the clothing to see if they fit correctly and if you like how they’re going to look. to avoid the last-minute hassle of not like it and changing it right before the shoot.
TIP 2: CHECK THE WEATHER
This is a big one many times people forget to check the weather. With all the hassle and preparation for the session this important step can be overlooked. I’ve come across clients who wore summer clothing during the fall session, and it happened to be freezing that day and all the kiddos where super uncomfortable.
TIP 3: CONSIDER LOCATION
For example, many times I’ve had client’s book for a beach location and wear a turtleneck or a full blazar. For this location I would recommend for women a flowy dress if it’s chilly out add layers. For the men casual is perfect a button-up shirt is fine paired with light washed jeans also adding some layers if its cold out.
TIP 4: CHOOSE COORDINATING COLORS
Think of the color wheel. I advise my clients to start with mom first. Moms tend to have the most trouble selecting what colors to wear for themselves. Then based off what mom wears you can find similar colors for the other family members.
TIP 5: CONSIDER THE SEASON
This might seem like a no brainer but believe me this can easily be overlooked. I normally tell my clients to pick colors according to the current season. For example, if it’s winter ill suggest dark navy blue or dark red and emerald, green. During spring some pastille colors more flowy dresses. For fall I’ll suggest orange, brown, some creams and some big hats.
TIP 6: CONSIDER THE PURPOSE FOR THE PHOTOS
For example, If your booking for your Christmas photos in October or November keep in mind all the tips listed above. In addition to what the season and weather it would be like for Christmas. Considering the Christmas theme I would suggest dark navy blue or dark red and emerald, green.
TIP 7: AVOID LOUD COLORS AND PRINTS
When I say loud colors I mean bright orange, parrot green, magenta and so on. Colors like this are distracting and take away from the intimacy that were trying to achieve in the session. Instead think warmer tones you can never go wrong with earth tones. No prints skip out on the strips or any other prints you can think of. Prints also take away from the intimacy.
TIP 8: NO LOGOS
This means anything from the smallest one lettered logo to the big logos. Stay away from wearing shoes that have a visible logos. Also, this is a big one don’t wear shirts with logos as under shirts! My camera will detected it. Logos will not look good and are very distracting. We want to focus on the connection between the family not the distracting logo.
TIP 9: AVOID PLACING ALL SUBJECTS IN THE SAME COLOR
Going back to color coordinating and thinking of the color wheel. We want each family member to stand out and be seen. It’s very hard to have the family stand out if everyone is wearing the same color. If you really want your kids to match, I suggest matching the bottoms but not the tops. Like I mentioned before look at the color wheel and find similar colors that match each other. This is the best way to have your family stand out and not be washed away.
